How to Read Mountain Weather Before Heading Out

How to Read Mountain Weather Before Heading Out
Weather in the mountains changes much faster than in the city — a clear sky in the morning guarantees nothing for the afternoon. Before confirming any outing, our guides check mountain-specific forecasts, not just the general forecast for the nearest city. Some signs we teach people to recognize in the field: clouds building vertically during the morning often signal afternoon thunderstorms — the classic mountain rule is to be off exposed terrain before midday during convective storm season. A sudden shift in wind, a rapid drop in temperature, or fog rising from the valley are all signs to reconsider the route. If you're planning an outing on your own (not with us), check the forecast the night before and again that morning, and always have a turnaround point decided in advance — before you leave, not in the moment of doubt.
